As the cofounder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group–one of the fastest growing media companies in the world–celebrated as one of the world’s most influential women, and gracing the covers of magazines, she was, by any traditional measure, extraordinarily successful. Yet as she found herself going from brain MRI to CAT scan to echocardiogram, to find out if there was any underlying medical problem beyond exhaustion, she wondered is this really what success feels like?
Hey guys and welcome to our #ReadWithTheSkinny book club review for Thrive, Arianna Huffington’s book about finding balance and the true meaning of success. We were all really excited to read this book in the hopes of being inspired, informed and changed with tips and insights from an incredibly successful woman who went through a major life change after a traumatic ‘wake up call’. What we actually found was a book that was sure, full of good reminders but maybe not quite as inspiring as we’d hoped.
Thrive is a book that discusses how to live a ‘third metric life’; the first two metrics being money and power but the third – balance and happiness. Through our discussion at the book club we all agreed that perhaps this book was a little more groundbreaking in 2015 when it was released as even two years ago, the popularity of self care, finding more balance, unplugging and meditating were a little less mainstream so by this time, we’re used to hearing more about them.
While the book was written in a manner that wasn’t quite as captivating as some of us in the book club had hoped, it was still full of great reminders for self care. Discussed in the book are the topics of the importance of sleep, unplugging, finding peace through routines, slowing down to live in the moment and other anecdotes and tips for living a ‘third metric life’. We all felt that Arianna shone when she spoke of her relationship with her mother and shared family anecdotes rather than facts and quotes from studies.
Overall, while it wasn’t as riveting a read as we’d maybe hoped, if you’re struggling with balance, stress or happiness, this book could have some insights and prove to be a catalyst for changes in your life. Have you read this book? Leave us some suggestions for what we should read next!

I am reading “Briefcase Moms” by Lisa Martin. It’s great read so far! All about discovery and change as a working mom, and also relevant to non working moms and women in general!
